Michael Douglas Talks About Fatherhood the Second Time Around
Michael Douglas shared with AARP magazine what it is like to be a father of two young kids at his age and how different of a father he is now.
The actor admits that he made several mistakes when it came to fathering his 31-year-old son Cameron, but the second time around he is determined to get it right with his two kids with wife Catherine Zeta Jones. The couple have two kids together, Dylan, 9 and Carys, 6.
“My career was the most important thing in my life, followed by marriage and children,” he admits of his younger years. “And it’s completely reversed now. I never anticipated starting a family and the joy of raising kids at my age.”
With his older son Cameron in jail at the moment facing drug charges, Michael apparently is willing to take some of the blame. “I’ll assume whatever responsibilities I have to,” he says. “Would it have been better to have been around more? Absolutely. There were absences, and I was no angel.”
Nowadays, though he says his priorities are completely different. Michael says, “I think it’s easier for me to be a good father. I’m not so concerned about my career. I like to be home a lot more now. I see the confidence my kids have got versus the struggle for confidence that I had or that Cameron might have dealt with.”
