Dedicated Dad Shaves Beard to Celebrate Preemie’s Homecoming

When Jason Sucharski noticed his newborn preemie had a blond beard, the 31-year-old teacher, together with his brother and his best friend, decided not to shave until baby Chase came home from the hospital.

Chase Walker Sucharski was born prematurely on July 24 at 1 pound, 7 ounces.  Well, yesterday all three men shaved their full beards and today, baby Chase comes home from the hospital.

The baby’s blond beard is common to preemies, a condition known as lanugo — fine white hair that covers a fetus’ body and face.  As the infant gets closer to full term, the hair disappears.

“I had heard of lanugo from the baby books,” Jason Sucharski said.  “I knew babies grew out of it by the time they’re born.  In his case, he didn’t.  So, I said, if he’s going to have a beard, I’m going to have a beard.”

When his brother, Chris Sucharski and best friend, Paul Jorgenson came to the hospital for a visit, they decided to support the proud dad in his quest to count down the days until his son came home from the hospital.

Chase was originally due to be born on November 8, so he is still making it home a few days early.  It has been a difficult time for the family according to mother Kelly Sucharski, a Transit Middle School teacher.

Chase had “extremely” underdeveloped lungs.  He underwent heart surgery, and the surgery helped to improve his lungs.  The baby will be going home on oxygen.

“He had to be a fighter to go through what he did,” said Kelly.  “He looks so much better than when he was born.”

Today is definitely a happy day for the Sucharski family!  Welcome home, Chase!

X Factor stars Stacey Solomon & Danyl Johnson visit GOSH

X Factor finalists including Danyl Johnson, 27, & Stacey Solomon, 20, visited GOSH, (Great Ormond Street Hospital) in London to show support for the incredible work of the charity.

Stacey Solomon said that she found visiting child cancer patients particularly emotional as she has her own young son Zach.

Stacey said: “I think the reality is that it doesn’t matter what, it can happen to anyone at any age - no one’s immune to anything,”

“But I can’t think of anything worse than your child being ill. Nothing compares to that.”

X Factor stars toured the Elephant Ward, which treats cancer patients.

Danyl Johnson said: ”It just makes you weigh up everything that’s going on with your life.

“You meet the parents who are going through the hardest time ever - no one wants their kid to be ill ever.”

Danyl Johnson, who is a teacher from Reading in Berkshire, said he was touched during a visit to Joshua, who’s just six, because he was in the age range of his pupils.

Danyl said: “It’s really emotional - especially Joshua as he’s in the age range that I teach,”

”It’s hard but it’s even harder for Stacey, who has a little boy.”

All The X Factor stars visited the ward after recording a cover of Michael Jackson’s hit, “You Are Not Alone”, proceeds of the single will be going to the GOSH Charity.

In 2006, The X Factor winner Leona Lewis visited the hospital days after her victory to share her success with the patients and there’s a long association between the hit UK TV show and GOSH. Leona began an annual tradition that The X Factor winner visits the hospital.

All the contestants will be performing the single on The X Factor on November 15 and will be available to download on the same date.

Choices, Choices! New Baby or Health Insurance?

The health care debate continues in Washington while families face stark choices

Some women in the United States are forced to make a choice between having a baby or paying for health insurance.  Families are struggling with very difficult choices as the healthcare debate continues in Washington.

ABC’s Tom Shine reports that Peggy Robertson ran into problems when she was shopping for more affordable health insurance for her family.  Her husband is self-employed, and she has two young boys.  Robertson was shocked when the Golden Rule Insurance Company denied the family coverage due to her C-section when he son Luke was born in 2006.  “I called Golden Rule and they said that if I would get sterilized, they would then be able to offer insurance to me.”

Amanda Buchanan’s family also faced difficult choices concerning health insurance.  Her husband hired on as a teacher for a rural school at a salary of $33,000 a year.  It would cost the family $760 a month to cover the entire family under the school’s group health insurance policy.

That was a huge chunk of change out of her family budget, so Amanda went shopping for an individual policy to cover just her and her son.  The policy Amanda found for $280 a month carried a maternity deductible of $5,000.  At the time they were not planning to have another child.  A few months later, things canged and they contemplated having a second baby.  Amanda became angry that her insurance company seemed to be discouraging the addition to their family.  She felt like the insurance company was forcing her to pay basically the entire cost if she had a typical pregnancy.

Amanda and her husband decided to have a baby, and then planned to take Amanda off of the insurance.  The money they saved would be used to pay down their medical debt.  They thought they had arrived at a plan that would allow them to have another baby.  The couple was in for a rude awakening though when their second child was born.  Even though the hospital agreed to write off their bill, the medical expenses from the pregnancy and delivery “ate up 28 percent of our net income in 2008,” according to Buchanan.

         

Woman Pregnant With 12 Babies Set To Deliver This Month

A Tunisian woman is pregnant with 12 babies after having IVF done.

It is being claimed that teacher from Tunis, is pregnant with 12 babies, 6 girls and 6 boys, and is set to deliver the babies this month. The woman, who has not been named, received IVF after having two miscarriages in two years.

British fertility experts say it is possible for a woman to be pregnant with 12 babies but is very unlikely that all or even one of the babies will survive the birth. One expert claims that there is less than 1 in 100 chance that even one of the babies will survive.

That has not deterred the woman, who is in her 30’s and is supposedly in good health. The woman is says “‘All I want to do is be able to hug my babies and show them all my love.” She added, “This is an absolute miracle, and we all feel blessed after struggling so hard to have children.”

The father of the babies has even said that the medical team is going to allow the woman to give birth naturally to all 12 babies.

British experts are claiming that a natural birth would be impossible and due to the amount of weight of 12 babies and the fact that the uterus can only stretch so far and carry so much weight, it would be likely that the woman would go into labor at 20 weeks - making it hard for a baby to survive being born that early.

It is unknown how far along the woman currently is in her pregnancy, but usually the sex of the baby can’t be seen on ultrasound until at least 16 weeks.

Peter Bowen-Simpkins, a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said: ‘It is certainly possible to carry 12 babies but not for long.”

He added, “The problem is the capacity of the uterus.  This woman is going to be enormous by 20 weeks.  And when the uterus goes into labour there is nothing you can do about it. The youngest that babies have survived is at 22 to 23 weeks.  They need very intensive nursing and the majority have permanent neurological damage. You’d need a very good intensive paediatric unit to cope with this. We couldn’t do it in this country, we don’t have a unit with 12 intensive care cots. I don’t like to dampen her enthusiasm but the chances are she will deliver at 20 weeks. I wouldn’t even give her a one in 100 chance of even one surviving. It’s frightening.”

In January of this year, Nadya Sulemom went above doctor’s expectations and delivered 8 healthy babies. She has since taken all 8 babies home and they are all thriving.

Other women have not been as lucky as Nadya.

Mandy Allwood, a British woman, became pregnant with 8 babies after taking fertility drugs. Doctors advised her to to abort some of the babies but she chose not to and gave birth at only 22 weeks. None of the babies survived.

         

Swine Flu claims Tragic First American Victim in USA

Judy Trunnell has become the first American to die from, “Swine Flu” or (A)H1N1. Identified as a, “beautiful person” and teacher of disabled children she gave birth to a baby via c-section only days before passing away.

The number of confirmed American swine flu cases increased by 60 per cent today to 642 from 403, the death toll now stands at two.

Judy Trunnell was named by CNN who also reported she was eight months pregnant when she was placed on life support in April.

She was from Cameron County, on the United States/Mexico border.

Judy Trunnell’s cousin, Mario Zamora, said: “When they confirmed it was the swine flu, of course, that concerned me and the rest of us. She was just a beautiful person warm at heart. She worked with disabled children as a teacher.”

Trunnel is survived by her husband and 4-year-old daughter.

         

Mother Falls To Death After Not Being Able To Breastfeed

An Inquest ruled an open verdict death this Friday on the death of a mother who was depressed after not being able to breast feed.

Katy Isden, 30, had been seen on CCTV footage taking a lift to the top of a 20 floor building onto the roof. She had then been seen on another video tape falling 300ft (92m) to her death last November.

The inquest had been told that the new mother had suffered from post natal depression four months after having her son, Benjamin. It is believed the depression had been due to her having trouble with breast feeding her baby.

Mrs Isden, who worked as a teacher had left the UK in 2007. She had been living with her husband James, 31 in the 14th floor of the New York apartment where she had fallen.

Geraint Williams, Coroner for Worchestershire, read from a statement: “Mr Isden called 911 after seeing his wife on the ground outside the apartments where they lived.
“He called police and said he thought his wife had fallen but he couldn’t be sure whether it was her or not.”

“He said she was upset nursing the child and had an appointment to see the lactation nurse that morning.
“She had seemed depressed about the feeding difficulties but had sought no help about that”, Mr Williams had read.

Her parents told the inquest that their daughter had seemed distressed and very unhappy. Mrs Isden’s mother had been planning to visit her daughter, but had arrived just after the incident had happened.

In the apartment, a note had been left to her mother saying: ‘I have an appointment [with the nurse] at 11.30am, I will see you when I get back’.”

No alcohol or drugs had been found in her body, and Mr Williams had recorded an open verdict as they had been unable to show whether she had fallen or jumped.
