Mother Banned From Breast Feeding 11-Week-Old
A mother in Nottingham was left in shock after staff of a leisure centre told her she could not breast feed her 11-week-old son by the swimming pool.
Laura Whotton, 26, from Carrington had been feeding her baby Joshua at the pool so she could safely watch her 4-year-old son Thomas.
She was approached by a member of staff from the John Carroll Leisure Centre, and told to stop breast feeding as she was breaching the pool’s strict ban of food and drink.
Whotton told her local paper: “When it happened, it made me feel angry.”
“It could put people off going swimming and has made me not want to go to the John Carroll Leisure Centre again. But an apology would be fine.”
Nottingham City Council has said that they will apologize to Ms Whotton, and that it has been, “a misunderstanding”. New guidelines will also be issued to members of staff.
“The rules are that there’s definitely no food and drink poolside, but breastfeeding is exempt from that rule. People can breastfeed anywhere.” said a spokesman for Nottingham Council.

Mother Falls To Death After Not Being Able To Breastfeed
An Inquest ruled an open verdict death this Friday on the death of a mother who was depressed after not being able to breast feed.
Katy Isden, 30, had been seen on CCTV footage taking a lift to the top of a 20 floor building onto the roof. She had then been seen on another video tape falling 300ft (92m) to her death last November.
The inquest had been told that the new mother had suffered from post natal depression four months after having her son, Benjamin. It is believed the depression had been due to her having trouble with breast feeding her baby.
Mrs Isden, who worked as a teacher had left the UK in 2007. She had been living with her husband James, 31 in the 14th floor of the New York apartment where she had fallen.
Geraint Williams, Coroner for Worchestershire, read from a statement: “Mr Isden called 911 after seeing his wife on the ground outside the apartments where they lived.
“He called police and said he thought his wife had fallen but he couldn’t be sure whether it was her or not.”
“He said she was upset nursing the child and had an appointment to see the lactation nurse that morning.
“She had seemed depressed about the feeding difficulties but had sought no help about that”, Mr Williams had read.
Her parents told the inquest that their daughter had seemed distressed and very unhappy. Mrs Isden’s mother had been planning to visit her daughter, but had arrived just after the incident had happened.
In the apartment, a note had been left to her mother saying: ‘I have an appointment [with the nurse] at 11.30am, I will see you when I get back’.”
No alcohol or drugs had been found in her body, and Mr Williams had recorded an open verdict as they had been unable to show whether she had fallen or jumped.

Newborn Breast Fed By Wrong Mother At Hospital
New parents were horrified to learn that their newborn baby had been breast fed by another woman.
The mistake happened at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in New Hampshire (USA).
According to the couple, a nurse had mistakenly taken their baby to the wrong mother who then proceeded to feed the baby.
“All we were told is she did breast feed,” said the unnamed father. “We were told it was only five minutes but after talking to this person we were told it was a significant amount of time.”
It is believed that the nurse had misread the identification number on the baby’s ID tag, which matches the parents number.
The father had asked the woman if she had been aware that she had nursed the wrong child.
“We point blank asked her, ‘did you not know you were taking care of our baby?’ and her response was ‘I thought it wasn’t my baby but I didn’t want to sound crazy so I didn’t say anything,’” he said.
Officials at the hospital are investigating how the mix up happened and have apologised to the family.
