Implanon implants being given to girls of 12

The NHS are reported to be giving Girls as young as 12 contraceptive implants, (Brand name Implanon) without the consent of parents.

Apparently the implants are regularly given to girls under 16 who are assessed to be too irresponsible to take oral contraceptives daily, whilst maintaining an active sex life.

A plastic implant is injected by Doctors underneath the skin which releases the hormone progesterone. In Scotland, a 12-year-old who became pregnant at 11 was given the implant and children are assessed at 13 or 14 years old.

New government guidelines said the implant was safe and there should be no age limit. The implant guards against pregnancy for up to three years.

Critics suggest that offering Implanon so young and so freely will put more young girls at risk of sexually transmitted infections and diseases.

Michaela Aston, of the educational charity Life, said: “All parents will be horrified to hear this.”
