She added, “I’m an incurable optimist and a go-getter - it’s in my nature to focus much more on what makes me happy than what makes me nervous.”

When probed about the secret to her apparently happy relationship, Demi said: “I think that’s too big of a question to take on right now. I like to look at where I am in the present moment as being the highlight.”

Kate was dressed down in jeans and a red hoodie with sneakers as she headed out to a baby massage appointment with her son Billy. She appread to be all smiles and looked like a normal mother.

Studies have shown that massage can help with circulation, breathing and digestion in babies. It also helps to encourage better sleeping patterns in infants as well.

Unlike other celebrity mums, Kate doesn’t feel the pressure to lose the baby weight within weeks of giving birth. After giving birth to her 3-year-old daughter Darcey, Kate lost a dramatic amount of weight due to an underactive thyroid. This time around she has no problems with her thyroid and is working with a trainer from “The Biggest Loser” to shed the baby pounds.

Premature baby killed by nurse’s accidental glucose overdose

goshA premature baby treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital died due to a nurse’s error according to testimony given to an inquest.

On Christmas Eve of 2008, Poppy Davies was brought into the world three months premature. Poppy was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital soon after birth to receive specialized care. However, a nurse with only three weeks of experience made critical errors that caused the baby to receive a fatal dose of glucose, killing the baby soon after.

Suffering from faulty lungs and heart, Poppy was considered a high-risk patient at the hospital. Yet the hospital assigned Nurse Rebecca Tite—attending an intensive care course at the hospital—to Poppy’s care.

The inquest, held at St. Pancras Coroner’s Court, heard testimony that on January 11, 2009, Mrs. Tite was advised to change the glucose machine attached to Poppy after another patient needed the bigger machine Poppy was using.

Mrs. Tite had to set up a smaller machine and was forced to change the concentration of the glucose solution due to a change in administration method. However, a control clamp was accidentally left open, and a three-way valve which controlled the flow of glucose was set up incorrectly.

The uncontrolled flow of glucose solution raise Poppy’s glucose levels to nearly 20 times what it should have been, causing massive, irreversible effects to her body. Doctors tried to save Poppy’s life by administering insulin to lower glucose levels, but Poppy died on February 1.

The parents of Poppy were also at the inquest. Poppy’s father David Daly said afterwards, “I know what happened. I don’t need all of this [the testimony] to tell me. I don’t know why a nurse with just three weeks experience was looking after Poppy.”

“It’s heartbreaking, but what can you do. You’ve just got to carry on fighting.”

Lying still after artificial insemination treatment increases success rate

October 30, 2009 by Shawn Douglas

woman_lying_on_backLying still in the supine position after undergoing artificial insemination increases the chance of conception by as much as 50 percent according to a recent study.

There have been various methods tried throughout the centuries to increase the chances of conception after sex. One method women have tried is elevating their hips for 10 or 20 minutes to ensure that every last sperm has its chance to do its magic. While there has been little scientific evidence in the past to suggest that it works, a recent study with artificial insemination may change some people’s thoughts.

The study, published in the British Medical Journal, tested 390 couples utilizing intrauterine insemination and found that 27% of the women who remained lying down after the procedure eventually had a successful birth. Only 17% of the women who stood up and moved directly afterwards gave birth.

All couples in the study were given three cycles of treatment, but only half of the women were allowed to remain lying down after each treatment.

The study team from the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam suggests that all women be allowed to remain in the supine position after the procedure. “We show that women suffering from subfertility have a 50 percent higher chance to conceive after remaining in supine position after intrauterine insemination (IUI),” said lead researcher Dr. Inge Custers.

Dr. Inge said she was aware that it may take some work for clinics to adjust their practices, but the changes would likely be beneficial.

“Although immobilization takes more time and occupies more space in busy rooms, the intervention will be economic in the long run, as pregnant patients will not return in subsequent cycles,” said Dr. Inge.

In an editorial accompanying the study, Professor William Ledger of Sheffield University suggested that more research needs to be done before a definitive conclusion could be reached.

“Their findings agree with the intuitive idea that lying with a ‘feet up’ tilt for a few minutes after insemination, either after intercourse or intrauterine insemination, allows the sperm to ascend into the uterine cavity, before standing up brings the negative influences of gravity into play. Such postcoital positioning was advocated in the United States many years ago but did not seem to improve conception rates after sex.”

Professor Ledger added, “The results suggest that units should carry out their own evaluation of immobilisation versus immediate mobilisation after intrauterine insemination, to test the hypothesis in the ‘real world.’ If successful, more couples could be spared the rigorous and costly process of in vitro fertilisation.”

Teen Vogue Magazine cover accused of glamourising young pregnancy

October 30, 2009 by Baby Chums

teen_vogue_magazine_cover19-year-old Jourdan Dunn from Britain is featured on the US magazine, “Teen Vogue” and while showing no signs of a baby bump on the cover, inside she is interviewed and says she is due in December.

Opposed to warning teens about pregnancy at an age of immaturity, the magazine has been slammed by critics for making light of teen parenthood and potentially glamorising it.

Amy Astley, Teen Vogue’s editor-in-chief, said the magazine didn’t find out about Jourdan’s pregnancy until after the cover shoot but that editors had not even considered pulling the cover when they did.

Astley said in a statement: “Teen pregnancy is a difficult, real-life issue that Teen Vogue readers (with an average age of 18) are mature enough to be exposed to,”

“Teen Vogue felt it was important to support, not punish, Jourdan Dunn, who contributed to a beautiful photo shoot and who will surely have an ongoing and successful career in fashion.”

Valerie Huber, the executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association said: “Teen parenting isn’t glamorous, even if you are a teen model,”

The magazine should be used as a teachable moment because the media and popular culture help shape “the social script for teenagers,” said Bill Albert, a spokesman for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

“It shapes what they think is cool, is not cool, what’s in, what’s out, what’s acceptable, what seems to be the social norm,” he said. “It’s not the only influence and I’d suggest not the most powerful, but it is an influence.”

“White Staff Only” for my babies delivery - Alleged racist request at UK hospital

milton_keynes_hospitalA woman about to give birth at a Buckinghamshire, UK hospital allegedly objected to non-white staff being in the delivery room. The request was refused by the Hospital who have begun a “full investigation”.

The unnamed white woman, had a Caesarean section. It’s unclear whether this was part of her birthing plan or an alleged demand on-the-spot. A hospital spokeswoman said: “A specific request was made, but due to patient confidentiality, we cannot go into detail,”

“We did not change medical rotas.”

According to 2009 figures, 56 per cent of the hospital workforce is white, 6.2 per cent Asian and 6.3 per cent black.

Staff at the hospital have complained to the Equality and Human Rights Commission about the way the situation was handled earlier this month.

She added that there were medical complications during the birth earlier this month, but that mother and baby had now returned home “safe, well and happy”.

The hospital said it is thought to be the first time such a request has been made to them.

A Department of Health spokesman said: “All staff and patients should be treated with respect at all times and not be subjected to discrimination or harassment on any grounds.

“We expect all parts of the NHS to adhere to this principle and are seeking urgent clarification from the trust.”

“Snoreplasty” - A simple cure for your snoring partner, finally… and it’s cost? £3!

October 30, 2009 by Baby Chums

snoring_man_woman_annoyedA throat specialist based in Southport near Liverpool, Hadi Al-Jassim, claims to have treated 400 patients with a cure for snoring, that is simple, cheap and effective called, “Snoreplasty.”

His team of consultants are offering an injection which they say is a genuine alternative to painful surgery.

Mr Al-Jassim said: ”As everyone knows, snoring can cause major problems for patients and in particular their partners,

”In most cases it’s the men who snore and their partners suffer sleep deprivation and at the end of the day you have to keep your partner happy - though women do snore as well.

”It causes all sorts of problems between partners and leads to marital, social and health problems.

”I am delighted with the treatment because, until this, there has been no effective treatment other than surgery.”

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic in which sodium tetradecyl is injected into the roof of the mouth and takes only two-minutes.

A sclerosing agent, the chemical is usually used in the treatment of varicose veins.

The injection combats snoring by stopping the soft tissue at the back of the mouth from vibrating, destroying the injected tissue. If too much chemical is used it will destroy surrounding tissue unnecessarily. If too little chemical is used the treatment will be unsuccessful.

Mr Al-Jassim, who is now giving lectures to other specialists across the country about Snoreplasty: ”Surgical treatment is very painful and takes weeks of recovery time so many patients decide not to do it because they can’t get the time off work or their health’s not strong enough for surgery.

”And in other cases surgery doesn’t work.

”After the jab, patients can go home straight away and eat about an hour later.

”It will help around 70 per cent of sufferers and has made life easier for many patients and their partners.

”Even with those people it hasn’t cured, they reported sleeping better and waking up feeling fresher.

”The jab can be given three times a year but some people find one injection lasts them a year.”

NHS advice says there are some simple things to try before turning to an injection or surgery:

  • maintaining a healthy diet and weight,
  • getting regular exercise to strengthen muscles all over your body,
  • trying to sleep on your side rather than your back,
  • avoiding alcohol before going to bed, and
  • quitting or cutting down on smoking.

Army researchers from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in America introduced Snoreplasty at the 2000 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Foundation.

Playground ban for parents labelled as potential paedophiles

A local council has banned parents from supervising their own children from two playgrounds, known as “adventure areas” because they have not been Criminal Records Bureau vetted. Instead they can watch from a perimeter fence.

Watford Council - Parents can watch their own children from a perimeter fence

The Watford Council policy has been attacked as insulting by furious relatives who say they are being labelled as potential paedophiles. The council said this was no different to other groups like brownies and cubs.

The council letter said it had no option but to ban all adults including parents and carers from the two sites.

Dorothy Thornhill, the elected mayor of Watford said the council authority has faced criticism from a dozen or so parents.

Ms Thornhill said: “The letter from a senior community playworker to parents was a bit like a sledgehammer to crack a nut but councils are in the front line and vilified if they don’t take these sorts of measures.

“This is not a playground we’re talking about but a unique gated and fenced facility where quite risky and challenging activities take place.”

Activities on the two half acre sites include a skateboard half-pipe, a zip line, rope swings, den building, arts and crafts, plus a wide range of indoor and outdoor sports activities.

She said the Harebreaks playground had never allowed adults to stay and the Harwood site had had a core of half a dozen parents who insisted on staying with their children.

It had distracted staff from adequately supervising the children leading to a series of incidents, Ms Thornhill said.

A council statement said: “We are aware that there may be circumstances where there is a need for a parent or carer to stay on site.

“If parents aren’t happy leaving their children - there are lots of other options open to them.”

Councillors in Watford claim they are only following Government guidelines and cannot allow adults to walk around playgrounds “unchecked”.

But a spokeswoman for Ofsted, (Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills) said: “Ofsted would never seek to prevent parents and carers having access to their own children.

“We would not insist that each parent must have a member of staff with them all times.

“Many settings operate very well with parents and carers present, and indeed this can be an important part of young children settling somewhere new.”

Sandra Bullock in custody battle with pornstar “actress” Janine Lindemulder

sandra_bullock_jesse_jamesSandra Bullock, 45, married to Jesse James, a former television presenter and CEO of West Coast Choppers has been embroiled in a custody battle over his 5 year-old daughter Sunny. Daughter Sunny is from his previous marriage to porn actress Janine Lindemulder, (Typically credited as just Janine).

The couple have been raising the child since January this year, while the girl’s mother, Janine Lindemulder, was serving a six-month sentence for tax evasion.

Lindemulder and James were married in 2002 on the show Motorcycle Mania 3. James left Janine to be with Bullock in 2003 while she was seven-months pregnant. During that time Lindemulder claims the stress left her unable to pay her taxes of which, reportedly, she still owes $318,000.

Lindemulder, 40, the star of dozens of porn flicks had previously shared custody of the child with James.

Supported by Bullock, Jesse has asked a judge in Orange County, L.A, to rule on whether Lindemulder is a fit mother.

In a statement to court, James suggested Sunny may not be safe with his ex-wife, adding that she should be “restrained from allowing the child around pornographers, drug addicts, guns and firearms, felons and other unsafe environments”.

After being charged in July last year, she sent a text message to James which read: “U WIN. Sandra has her baby congrats.”

The judge has yet to rule whether either of the parents or Bullock will have to give evidence in court.
