Carrie Anne Burton speaking about how she ended up entered the competition, “The high points of the series were London - I loved the buzz of London, the castings and the catwalk and the fashion shoots were great too, I loved everything really apart from the TV commercial casting with Mark Summers. tyson_daughterMike Tyson’s four-year-old daughter Exodus has died after a tragic accident.

Her seven-year-old brother found her hanging from a cord which was dangling from a treadmill in their home in Phoenix, Arizona.

Although her mother tried to resuscitate her at the scene, she was rushed to hospital in an “extremely critical condition”. She was placed on a life support machine, but yesterday she was pronounced dead.

The Boxer, who was out of town when the accident occurred, said in a statement:

“There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Exodus.

“We ask you now to please respect our need at this very difficult time for privacy to grieve and try to help each other heal.”

The injuries suggest that her death was the result of a tragic accident.

Sergeant Andy Hill said: “Somehow she was playing on this treadmill, and there’s a cord that hangs under the console, it’s kind of a loop.

“Either she slipped or put her head in the loop, but it acted like a noose and she was obviously unable to get herself out of it.”

The family have not yet arranged a funeral for Exodus.

Low Birth Weight Babies More Likely To Have High Blood Pressure As Adults

blood_pressureNew research has found that babies who are born underweight are more likely to have high blood pressure problems as adults.

Dr. Gerald Berenson has been part of a team studying the health of around 15,000 people in a small rural town in Louisiana over the last 35 years.

He has found that the average birth weight of black babies is lower than for white babies. He found that the health and financial circumstances of the mother did not make a difference.

Berenson said “They are… lighter by a few hundred grams in the blacks compared to whites,”

“So right off, there is a difference in birth weights, and males tend to have heavier birth weights than do females.”

It has been known that underweight babies may have more health problems during their infancy. Low birth weight is considered to be below 2,500 grams at birth.

The study found that babies which were born with a low birth rate had a higher chance of having high blood pressure when in their 30s and 40s.

“It may be because they begin to get higher blood pressure as people get older. And the effect of the low birth weight may become exaggerated at that point.” Berenson commented.

“We know that smoking, for example, affects the blood vessels in the placenta. We know that alcohol is bad,” Berenson he added.

“General nutrition, particularly in the early trimester, is very critical. That development in the early period of gestation is… is very important. So a baby in utero, early in development, is showing the effects of the environment.”

Baby Buggies that face forward are, “Traumatic” for children

baby_reaching_out_in_strollerA study suggests that baby buggies which face forward could stunt the development of children and even turn them into anxious adults.

Researchers found that Babies and children have higher stress and sometimes even, “trauma” in front facing buggies.

Parents attention’s were turned away from the child and were spoken to only rarely, at a stage of life when interaction is critical to development.

In stark contrast, children in parent-facing buggies were more likely to listen to their mothers talking, to sleep and to laugh. Indicating lower levels of stress.

The study carried out at Dundee University, the first to study the psychological effects of pushchairs/buggies, researchers observed 2,722 parents around the country. They found that parents were more than twice as likely to talk to their child if they used a face-to-face buggy, 25 per cent against 11 per cent.

Logically, If parents cannot easily see their infants faces, they may not realise in just how much distress their are in.

The average British child spends up to two hours a day in a pushchair between birth and the age of three, the study said.

Exercise Found To Be Beneficial During Pregnancy

Studies have found that an approved exercise program is beneficial for mother and baby during pregnancy.

Dr. Raul Artal, from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine said “We know that women who exercise during pregnancy have less chance of developing certain conditions like gestational diabetes,”

“Not only that, exercise maintains musculoskeletal fitness. Women can cope with the anatomical and physiological changes of pregnancy better when they’re in good shape. They also tolerate labor better and recover more quickly from delivery.”

“Women should be encouraged to continue living an active lifestyle.”

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has recommended that women aim to do at least half an hour of moderate exercise every day during pregnancy.

They reminded expectant mothers to consult with a doctor before starting any exercise program.

Benefits include lower fetal heart rates

Family practitioner, Dr. Thomas Wang in San Diego said “A lot of things depend on the level of fitness they had before,”

Certain activities should be avoided during pregnancy, such as scuba diving, skiing, horseback riding, gymnastics, and high impact sports. Weights should not be lifted above their heads, and there should be no strain to the lower back.

Pregnant women should avoid lying flat on their backs during the second and third trimesters, as this reduces the blood circulation to the fetus.

“Anything that involves impact or the chance of abdominal trauma, they should try to avoid,” Wang commented.

Approved exercises include Kegels, yoga, light dancing, swimming, walking, cycling and aerobics, as long as the woman takes care not to fall.

It is important that when exercising during pregnancy, avoid breathlessness or exhaustion. This may reduce the amount of oxygen the fetus receives.

Also, avoid exercising during hot weather or overheating, as this may affect the development of the baby.

“Floppy Baby Syndrome” - Scientists claim breakthrough

May 25, 2009 by Baby Chums

lab_mouseAustralian scientists claim they have made a breakthrough in the treatment of, “Floppy Baby Syndrome” a rare muscle disease where the majority of babies afflicted die before their first birthday.

The scientific team was able to cure mice affected by the severe disease by replacing a missing muscle protein.

This is an important step towards one day hopefully being able to better the lives of human patients.

The team focussed on proteins called actins. A gene called ACTA1 controls the production of actin in skeletal muscles.

It is key to allowing muscles to contract, but children with this disease have flawed versions of the gene and so the protein is not produced.

However, the scientists had seen that some children with floppy baby syndrome were not totally paralysed at birth.

When these children were studied, it was found that heart actin - another form of the protein - was “switched on” in their skeletal muscles, when that would not normally be the case.

Heart actin is found in skeletal muscles while the baby is developing in the womb, but has almost completely disappeared by birth.

The researchers found it was possible to cure mice genetically engineered to have the recessive form of the muscle disorder by replacing the missing skeletal muscle actin with heart actin.

Dr Kristen Nowak, of the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research, who led the study, said: “The mice with floppy baby syndrome were only expected to live for about nine days, but we managed to cure them so they were born with normal muscle function, allowing them to live naturally and very actively into old age.

“This is an important step towards one day hopefully being able to better the lives of human patients - mice who were cured of the disease lived more than two years, which is very old age for a mouse.”

They are analysing 1,000 existing medicines to see if any could increase the amount of heart actin in skeletal muscles.

Professor Nigel Laing, head of the research group, said: “Current therapies only target the effects of these conditions, not the condition itself - we hope our approach could lead to a much greater improvement for a range of muscle diseases.”

Professor Dame Kay Davies, of the University of Oxford, helped create the mice used in the study. She said the findings were promising.

“What we can’t guarantee is if we can find a chemical to increase levels of heart actin enough.

“But we do have an idea of what kind of compounds might work.”

Professor Davies added: “If we could then screen every pregnancy, we could start treating this towards the end of foetal life.

“It could go some way past giving just some movement, but it probably wouldn’t be possible to enable children to run around.

“However they would be likely to have a good quality of life.”

Floppy baby syndrome is distinct from babies who are deemed “floppy” because the development of their gross motor skills such as sitting and crawling is delayed.

maimonides_medical_centerOne Brooklyn hospital was kept busy last week, where a record breaking 74 babies were delivered within 48 hours.

Staff reinforcements were called in to the Maimonides Medical Center in New York, and an extra wing was opened after their 60-bed labour ward reached it’s maximum capacity.

Eileen Tynion, hospital spokeswoman, said that the hospital averages 40 babies every 48 days. Once or twice a year there is a baby surge of around 65 babies being born in 48 hours.

She was unable to recall any other time that numbers had peaked as high as they did from Tuesday. It is thought that it was due to the recent closure of two Brooklyn hospitals.
