Amy Pickard of, “The Waking Pill” dies after 8 year coma

Amy Pickard, 25, has died after an eight year coma, in which she birthed and lost a baby after an experimental phase of drug use in 2001.
Just 17-years-old, a teen from Hastings in East Sussex, she and a friend were discovered in a locked cubicle at public toilets, both had collapsed.
Amy Pickard lost oxygen to her brain for 15 minutes and was taken to a nearby Hospital, where her daughter Summer Louise was delivered although died five days later.
Her mother Thelma said she was not an addict, but that she associated, “with the wrong people”.
Amy was left in a persistent vegetative state after suffering brain damage.
In late 2007 she was seen by millions in the BBC documentary, “The Waking Pill” when the drug Zolpidem was used in an attempt to help revive her.
Just a few Weeks after taking the drug, she began to breathe unassisted. She reacted to food and showed signs of awareness.
At the time her mother said: “She is changing and it is amazing.
“When she takes the pill, I see her face relax and the old sparkle return to her eyes. It’s incredible.”
Amy was one of 360 people taking part in a worldwide revolutionary drugs trial which was thought to see coma patients “miraculously” come back to life.
Ms Pickard died on 10 October at a care home in Hastings.
