Economic Slump Causes A Decline In Birth Rate
US census figures show that the credit crunch has stongly slowed down the birth-rate.
The newly released figures show that there was only a 0.9% increase in the number of babies born in the year up to July 2008. This compares with a 2.7% increase of births in the year before the economic slump.
It is believed that families are worried about the financial implications of having more children. Mark Mather from the Population Research Bureau said:
“If prospects look worse for families, they’re going to be very likely to have fewer kids,”
High house prices may also play a role in putting couples off from having more children.
The National Center for Health Statistics, who made the findings, say it is too early to understand why there are fewer pregnancies.
13 out of 50 US States had a decline in the birth rate. 50 percent of all the children under the age of five in America are from minority households.
