Madonna and Her Daughters Attend the First Brick Laying for Raising Malawi Academy for Girls
Madonna took her two daughters Lourdes, 13, and Mercy, 4 to the first brick laying ceremony for the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, which Madonna is a school for girls in Malawi that Madonna has founded.
Madonna laid the first brick which had an inscription that read, “DARE TO DREAM.” The singer says that it had long been her dream to build a girl’s school.
The academy is set to open in 2011 and will help 500 orphaned girls.
The Millenium Promise CEO John W. McArthur commented on Madonna’s efforts saying, “In the space of just a few years, Gumulira has made major gains in food security, health services, education, and income-generation. We are incredibly grateful to Madonna and Raising Malawi for their partnership in making this progress possible, and their broader leadership in helping to highlight the dramatic and rapid inroads that can be made against extreme poverty.”
Madonna has adopted two children from Malawi, David and Mercy, and sees this academy as a way to give back to the country and help other children.
