Gwyneth Paltrow Opens Up About Her Postpartum Depression
In a new interview for Vogue, Gwyneth Paltrow opens up about postpartum depression and how her husband Christ Martin helped her recover from it.
In the latest issue of Vogue, Paltrow describes her “awful” experience with postpartum depression after the birth of her second child Moses in 2006.
At my lowest, I was a robot. I just didn’t feel anything,” she notes. “I had no maternal feelings for him – it was awful. I had no thoughts of harming him, thank God, but I couldn’t connect, and still, when I look pictures of him at three months old, I don’t remember that time.”
She adds, “I just didn’t know what was wrong with me…I felt really out of my body. I felt really disconnected. I felt really down; I felt pessimistic.”
She credits her husband for making her realize that she was suffering from postpartum depression and that she needed help. She says, “That was such a relief when he did because it was confirmation that it wasn’t just me.” When Chris confronted her about PPD she says that was the “beginning” of her road to recovery. “That was when I cracked it — I started exercising and I started thinking about working again,” Gwyneth says.
Paltrow says that she has moved past the experience but still notes, “ever since I had kids, I am tired.”
Gwyneth and Chris are parents to Apple, 5, and Moses, 4.
