Scottish couple welcomes ‘iPhone baby’ into the world
A Scottish couple, after four years of difficulties, used an iPhone application to conceive their first child.
Lena and Dudley Bryce had been trying to conceive for four years. Desperate to try anything, Lena turned to an iPhone application called the “Free Menstrual Calendar” which she found on FertilityFriend.com.
“Doctors couldn’t find any reason why I hadn’t been able to get pregnant,” Lena told The Scottish Sun in an exclusive interview.
“We’re young, fit and healthy and just expected everything would be fine, so it began to weigh a bit heavily on us. We were considering IVF or adoption. But Dudley gave me the iPhone for my birthday, and I downloaded the app.”
The couple, from Kelvinside, Glasgow, strictly followed the advice of the application. After entering in the date of her menstrual period, Lena took a daily body temperature reading, and followed the advice of the application to discover when she was most fertile.
Within two months of using the application, the couple conceived. Lena, 30, gave birth to 6 pound, 12 ounce Lola last Friday at Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital.
Dudley, a 31-year-old bar manager, told The Scottish Sun: “I’m absolutely over the moon. It was hard seeing other people have children. We were desperate to be parents. That phone was the best present I ever gave Lena.”
While many have branded the free application as another tool in the arsenal of conception, some have remained skeptical of the application’s use. Mashable.com, a social media Web site, said of the situation: “While congrats are in order for the Bryce family, the whole deal is kind of a head-scratcher. Was it really necessary to download an app in order to conceive? One would think that a trip to the doctor would yield the same results.”
