Mother Not Charged After Abandoning Baby In Wal-Mart Toilet
A Canadian woman who left her newborn baby in a Wal-Mart toilet has been found not guilty of abandoning her child.
During the week long trial in Saskatchewan, the judge found April Halkett, 22, innocent.
The Judge agreed with her defense lawyers that she was in shock and was confused after the birth of her son.
Halkett said that she did not know she was pregnant, and that after the delivery the baby was blue and not moving.
Jennifer Claxton-Viczko, Crown prosecutor, said “A mother has a responsibility to her children. All that she had to do was pick the baby up out of the toilet,”
“What she does do is just as important as what she doesn’t do.”
The child due to legal reasons can not be named, but has survived.
