Mother’s Kiss Kills 11-Day-Old Baby
Ruth Schofield, 35, has asked the Prime Minister and her local MP to bring more awareness to the dangers of Herpes in young babies.
Last November, Miss Schofield passed on Herpes Simplex Virus to her newborn daughter Jennifer through a cold sore.
The baby girl died after her vital organs failed after the infection. Dr James Adeley said that the mother probably caught HSV towards the end of her pregnancy.
Herpes is believed to kill six babies a year in the UK.
“I have been left totally devastated and heartbroken by the death of Jennifer. It’s more than a year since she died but the pain has not lessened.”said Miss Schofield of Lancaster. “More needs to be done as this can happen to anyone without them knowing about it.”

My baby died when she was just 14 days old from Herpes Simplex she contracted from the hospital. Charlotte’s organs also failed and failed quickly. It is truly devastating, and even though it’s been 4 years, we are still devastated. I am from Canada, and I don’t know the stats as to how many babies die each year from this here. When I tell others of my story, they are shocked that babies can die from Herpes Simplex. Much more needs to be done to educate the public.
