Doctor guilty of poisoning his mistress ‘will never see’ the baby vows mother

“I look at my son—so bright and so beautiful,” said Bella Prowse, “but for all I know he is a ticking time bomb. I will never know how much of those drugs I ingested, what damage may be there. I still can’t believe a man I loved and who I thought loved me could have done such a thing.”
Bella Prowse is of course talking about Dr. Edward Erin, the man she befriended at a 2007 St. Mary’s Hospital Christmas party for staff members. On October 19, Dr. Erin was found guilty of procuring, administering and attempting to administer poison to cause the miscarriage of his then pregnant mistress, Bella Prowse.
“He was lovely to me,” Ms. Prowse told The Mirror. “The best boyfriend I’ve ever had. I’m still in love with the person he was pretending to be.”
It didn’t take long for the couple to get together that December in 2007. A flurry of coffee dates, dinners and dates occurred, and Bella eventually cut off a casual relationship she had with another man, David. “I didn’t want to overlap,” she said.
Quickly the relationship developed into the realm of physical romance, and on January 22, Bella discovered that she was pregnant.
“My period was a couple of days late and Ed was badgering me to take a test,” she told The Mirror. “When I saw the blue line, showing I was pregnant, my heart sank. I texted him, ‘Positive’. He texted straight back, ‘Oh my God, no’.”
“He also said, ‘It’s too soon. We’ve only been together a few weeks. There are so many places I want to take you, so many things I want to do.’ I only knew that I didn’t want an abortion. As a consultant, he’s used to people doing what he tells them. He seemed astonished that I didn’t just go along with what he was saying.”
Things began to get suspicious after Dr. Erin applied pressure on Bella to get an abortion. A series of events occurred with beverages that, each time, roused her suspicion.
One morning soon after Ms. Prowse decided to keep the baby, Dr. Erin offered her some tea. “He had never offered before,” she said.
“He was standing over me, saying, ‘Drink it all up,’ and waited while I did. It tasted fine. But when I’d finished I saw a pale, yellow powder covering the bottom of the cup. I said, ‘That’s weird’. He came over, took it and went straight over to the sink to start washing it up. He said, ‘It’s just lime scale—you live in a hard water area.’”
After several similar events, Bella started collecting the evidence and took it to the police, though she at first tried to protect the identity of her lover. On February 13, detectives had confirmed traces of abortion drugs in both the evidence Bella presented and Bella’s urine. The next day, Dr. Edward Erin was arrested.
Despite the poison evidence and having been cheated on, Dr. Erin’s wife Lowri defended her husband. “How can the jury take the word of a self-harming, cannabis-smoking woman out for revenge against that of a doctor of good character who has done nothing but help people all his life?”
“That woman wanted to nab a consultant. My husband trusted her and she trapped him,” added Lowri.
Yet, Bella feels badly for Lowri and the Erin children. “Hearing her say those terrible things about me was a shock. But she and her two children are victims too. When he first slept with me, his youngest child was barely three months old. Horrible.”
At some point, Bella will have to make the decision to tell her son, Ernie, about his father that tried to kill him. “I will know when the time is right,” she said.
“Secrets this big can’t be hidden. But Ed will never see him. Ernie is my son. No one else’s.”
