Dead Baby Leeya bitten in face by an adult

A jury has heard how a baby of seven weeks old who died in hospital had been bitten in the face by an adult. Baby, “Leeya” had been “repeatedly and seriously assaulted”.
Kelly Inman, 21 and Olusola Akinrele, 33, from Cambridgeshire, denied murdering their daughter Leeya Akinrele.
Leeya died after, “catastrophic brain damage” prompted doctors to trun off the life support machine in December 2006. This was 12 days after she was taken to hospital after being discovered lifeless by paramedics at the couples home.
Miss Yvonne Coen QC said doctors noted, “strange smelling infected sores” on Baby Leeya’s nose and fingers, and x-rays revealed that she had a fractured skull, small fractures on her legs and arms, a fractured thigh bone, fractured ribs and fractured fingers.
Jurors believed that the damage to Leeya’s head had been caused shortly before Inman made the 999 call.
Specialists concluded that the sores on the little girl’s face and fingers had formed after she was bitten by an adult in the days before she was found at her home.
Miss Coen said tests had been carried out to try to match the teeth of Akinrele and Inman to the bite marks but experts could not be sure who had bitten the baby.
She said fractures to Leeya’s fingers were also caused when the baby was bitten.
Miss Coen said the injuries were not accidental or caused by rough handling and were not consistent with a “single episode of violence.”
The hearing adjourned for the day and continues on Wednesday.
