Inmate Sues Jail After Miscarriage

Shanika Terry, 19, has sued Cook County after she miscarried her unborn child in custody.

Terry had been arrested on charges of burglary, which she later pleaded guilty to. She appeared in court on Thursday and claimed that she had been neglected while an inmate of the Jail last July.

After 12 days of being in the Jail, Terry, who was 28 weeks pregnant, complained of cramps and abdominal pain. When she began to bleed, she requested the guards for medical assistance.

During the lawsuit, she alledges that she was taken to hospital several hours after she had reported her symptoms.

The lawsuit claims that the hospital were unable to detect a fetal heartbeat, the child was later stillborn. Terry also had damage to her kidneys as a result of the incident.

The Sheriff’s Department responsible for operating the jail has declined to comment on the case.
