Octuplets Take Place In Record Books
Nadya Suleman, 33, remains in hospital, after delivering octuplets. The babies now take their place as the longest surviving set of octuplets to be born in the United States.
The single mother who divorced in 2008 already has six children from in vitro, ages 2 to 7. She had used the remaining embryos to conceive the octuplets.
Her former husband is not the father of any of the children. The family live together with her parents in a modest three-bedroom house in Los Angeles suburb.
Neighbour, Baldo Ramirez, congratulated the family but was concerned over the case of the children.
“It’s nice in a way, but they are poor people and cannot afford this,” Mr. Ramirez commented “But God provides a way to cope.”
Two girls and six boys were born on Jan. 26 after the mother has received in vitro fertilization. Surprised doctors had expected seven babies and Ms. Suleman had speculated that there would be six.
They range in weight from one and a half pounds to three and a quarter pounds. Although initially Ms. Suleman had announced she would breast feed all eight babies - they are feeding on nutritional supplements and donated breast milk.
The babies are in incubators but breathing on their own, the hospital refers to them as Suleman Babies A to H. Publicist, Joann Killeen, would not reveal their names.
This is the countries second set of octuplets, 10 years ago after the first case in Texas, although one of those babies did not survive the first week.
Angela Suleman said her daughter has been “obsessed” with having children since she was at school.
“She loves children, she is very good with children, but obviously she overdid herself,” the Grandmother said.
Currently no laws restrict the number of eggs that can be planted in a mother’s womb, but fertility clinics will try and take into account the mother’s physical and mental conditions, as well as quality of home life.
Debate continues over the ethical questions of accepting a mother of six for fertility treatment, and the implecations of caring for 14 children. Ms. Suleman has a degree in child and adolescent counseling, she stopped working during her pregnancy.
The family are now considering several media offers, and there have been offers from ‘groups’ to move the family into a larger home.

I understand this mothers “need” for support. She needs to just except what is offered to her through her church. She made this decision now she needs to be responsible for it! I really wish you would all get off the TV stations trying to get donations and support for this family. She wanted them now she needs to raise them!! I am preg w/ my 7th child BY CHOICE but I do not expect assistance from anyone!! Between my husband and I we work 4 jobs to support our kids! She needs to grow up and raise her family!!
