Devastation: Body of Somer Thompson Found

Words do not seem adequate to describe the devastation and shock felt by the family, authorities and search volunteers who learned late yesterday that the body of Somer Thompson had been found in a Georgia landfill.

Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said he notified Somer’s mother, Diena Thompson, Wednesday that they had found her little girl. “I had to make one of the hardest calls I’ve ever had to make in my career last night, he said. The clothing Somer was wearing when she was reported missing and a birthmark enabled authorities to make a positive identification when the body was found.

Diena Thompson led her daughter’s favorite song, “You Are My Sunshine” at a vigil held in her daughter’s memory Wednesday night.

The quiet northeastern Florida community is in shock. Authorities continue to investigate all known sex offenders in the area.

“We feel very comfortable that we are going to solve this case,” Beseler told “Good Morning America” today, as police await an official identification from the medical examiner’s office.

The little girl’s body was found at a dump in Flokston, Georgia, the end destination for a garbage route that collects refuse in Orange Park, Florida, the town where Somer vanished Monday afternoon while she walking home from school.
