Diane Sawyer’s Final Moments on GMA Reflect on Interview with Children Born of Fathers Killed in 9/11 Terrorist Attacks
Diane Sawyer recalls her interview with the children of fathers who were killed in the 9-11 terrorist attacks as the biggest story of her time on the show. GMA’s two hour salute to Sawyer was likely an emotional time for the news show host as she moves on to replace Charles Gibson as “World News Anchor.”
During Sawyer’s monumental interview on the first anniversary of the attacks, she held twin baby girls in her arms. On Friday, the 8-year-old girls personally greeted Sawyer and presented her with roses. The reunion of 9/11 children recalled how “Good Morning America” brought them together for the first time.
“Thank you and bless you,” Sawyer said.
GMA celebrated Sawyer’s 11-year tenure on the show with video clips of numerous tapings. She joined GMA in January 1999 with Charles Gibson in what was supposed to be a temporary assignment to help the show recover network ratings.
Celebrity guests sending Sawyer well wishes included a taped tribute from former President George W. Bush. Sawyer covered his campaign for president.
A presentation of show bloopers and odd moments included Sawyer frying chicken with Aretha Franklin, dancing with John Travolta and riding a camel and hearing Bruce Willis confess his longtime crush on her.
George Stephanopoulos will be stepping into Sawyer’s place on GMA, and says he has his work cut out for him.
“My heart is smiling, and the privilege of sharing my mornings with all of you is more than I can say,” she said. “The best part of your life is when your family becomes your friends and your friends become your family.”
