Baby Girl Born After Woman Tried to Cut Baby From Mother’s Womb

Teka Adams was befriended at the Queen of Peace, Missionaries of Charity shelter for pregnant women in southeast Washington by 40-year old Veronica Deramous. Deramous persuaded the pregnant woman to come to her apartment by promising her baby clothes and other items for her unborn child. Adams was in her third trimester.

The Associated Press reported that Adams had stayed at the shelter for at least a month.

After luring Adams to the apartment, Deramous bound the woman’s hand and held her captive for several days. Finally, she attempted to cut the unborn child from Ms. Adam’s body. Several days later Adams was able to escape.

Officer Michelle Reedy, spokesperson for the Prince George’s County Police Department, stated that Veronica Deramous has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, false imprisonment and other related charges. According to police, Deramous told some people she was pregnant even though she was not.

Teka Adams is expected to make a full recovery. According to the police report, when she was found her “abdomewn was cut and her intestines, stomach and placenta were exposed.” Authorities recovered bloody towels and a bowl with water and washcloths on a bedroom floor in the apartment. They also found a box cutter and razor blades which police believe were used in the attack.

The police report goes on to state that Deramous had her 17-year-old son hold the victim’s hands behind her back as she bound her with duct tape and then held her in the bedroom for several days. The son has not been charged at this time.

“You’re strong, you can handle what I’m going to do to you,” the police report described the comments Deramous made to Adams, and then she turned up the volume on the TV in the bedroom, gagged Adams and began to cut her abdomen open. Deramous then stopped while Adams was moaning in pain.

Adams was able to free herself early Sunday while Deramous slept. She fled from the apartment, went upstairs and knocked on doors until the located someone to call police. Deramous and her son left after spotting Adams outside the apartment.

The attacker was later arrested in Arlington County in Virginia where she was being held pending transport to Maryland to face charges.
