World’s oldest Mother at 70 celebrates baby’s first Birthday

Rajo Devi the World’s oldest mother has celebrated her baby’s first birthday on Friday in Haryana, a state in northern India.

Last year Rajo Devi garnered global attention after successfully giving birth to a healthy baby girl through in-vitro fertility (IVF) treatment. For her 72-year-old husband, Bala Ram, it was third time lucky, having failed to become a father in two earlier marriages.

Rajo Devi said: ‘‘We’re happy to have a child and also performed ‘Jalwa’ (first birthday celebration), a ceremony held only for a male child in Haryana, on Friday,

“Life was miserable before the birth of child (Naveen Lohan). We read an advertisement on the technology (IVF) in a newspaper and decided to take its help. I took prescribed medicine for the birth of the baby,” said Rajo.

The doctors who assisted the elderly couple through IVF success said that advances in technology has helped many childless couples fulfill their dream.

Dr. Anurag Bishnoi, said: “The technology helps the creation of embryo outside the body and it is transferred into the body at appropriate time. This technology has been revolutionized in last few years due to various developments. As a result success rate has increased. Earlier, the success rate was 30 per cent, now it is 50 per cent,”

“We have waited for more than 40 years for this child, ” says Rajo Devi.

“It was God’s gift to us that she arrived.”

She also says that she plans to breastfeed her “for at least three years”. And, who knows, maybe she will.
