Witnesses Capture Baby Deer’s Struggle with Lions at National Zoo
Witnesses captured a baby deer’s struggle with lions at the National Zoo on video as they watched for over 20 minutes.
The baby deer was in and out of a moat while lions clawed and swatted at it. The shrieking spectators drew a crowd, while some parents took their children away from the scene.
According to witness Rob Ephraim, the deer “ran between people” at the railing surrounding the sunken enclosure of the lion’s den. Zoo officials believe the deer wandered in from Rock Creek Park.
The deer was immediately jumped by a lion and dragged towards the stairwell area of the den. The deer finally managed to get free and made its way to the safety of the moat. Zoo officials were then able to rescue the deer after moving the lions out of the enclosed area.
The baby deer appeared to have escaped virtually unharmed according to the video footage aired on television stations across the country. Sadly, zoo officials report that “the deer had a serious wound on its belly” and was eventually euthanized.

The zoo was equiped with the medical capabilities to help and heal the deer. They took the easy way out and euthanized the poor thing. It deserved better and a zoo of all places should have done the right thing.
