Shark gives birth through bite in shock ‘Caesarean’
Amazingly a shark birthed four shark pups through a gash in it’s side, caused by another shark’s bite. Mother and babies are doing fine.
The bite, caused by a fellow shark is a regular occurrence amongst sharks in the wild.
Following the rather unconventional delivery in New Zealand, visitors saw the injured shark and were the first to alert staff at Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World in Auckland that they had seen something float from the gash.
Staff then removed the mother and found four more babies still in the womb before a Vet stitched the injury closed.
All eight shark pups survived.
However, experts say, the, “Cesarean” birth had probably saved the pup’s lives. Had the mother given birth naturally, most likely nocturnally, the babies would have been eaten by adult sharks and stingrays before staff could intervene.
