Jennifer Hudson returns to work three months after birthing son David
The Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson, 28, who garnered praise for her breakout role in 2006’s Dreamgirls, will play the wife of Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first black president, in the drama, ‘Winnie’. This, just three months after giving birth to son David.
Variety reports that the film will go into production May 30th in South Africa and Robben Island, (Seven kilometres off the coast of Cape Town) where anti-apartheid activist Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. Hudson is also expected to sing the film’s theme song.
Hudson told Variety: “I was compelled and moved when I read the script,”
“Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and I’m honored to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told.”
Hudson says she’s seeing traits of a performer in her little boy;
“He seems like he’s very interested in music already,” Hudson told Usmagazine.com in September. “The other night he was having a fit and screaming and sometimes when I play music, he will just calm down. I was exactly the same way.”

I look forward to seeing Jennifer Hudson in this role. Winnie Mandela’s story needs to be told.
