Fort Hood shootings: Unborn baby death could bring murder charges to 14 counts

Military officials heading the Fort Hood Shootings investigation are still deciding whether to charge Major Nidal Hasan with a 14th count of murder for the death of the unborn child of a pregnant shooting victim.

Francheska had only recently returned from a tour in Iraq, where she disarmed bombs, coming back early because she was pregnant and expecting a baby boy in May.

On Monday, dozens of family members, former classmates, teachers and neighbors gathered outside Velez’s home in Chicago’s West Humboldt Park neighborhood for an emotional candlelight memorial to the young woman nicknamed “Cheka.”

Major Hasan, 39, the Army psychiatrist accused of shooting dead 13 people and wounding 29 at the Texas base last week will certainly face 13 charges of premeditated murder under the military’s legal system.

Hasan could be sentenced to death if convicted, although no serviceman has been executed since 1961.

Barack Obama has ordered a review of whether US intelligence agencies properly handled and shared their information about the Fort Hood shootings suspect Nidal Hasan. The FBI confirmed that the US government had known of up to 20 emails that Major Hasan exchanged with a radical imam in Yemen since December 2008.

Reportedly Major Hasan was seen as having over-zealous religious views and strange behavior by the American doctors overseeing his medical training, but they were concerned that they might be seen as anti-Muslim if they reported their observations.
