Fingertip Amputations Reported, Maclaren Baby Strollers Recalled

A pricey British stroller maker, Maclaren, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission are expected to release an official stroller recall tomorrow involving 1 million umbrella strollers sold in the United States.

The voluntary recall covers all Maclaren umbrella strollers sold in the United States from 1999 through 2009 and include the following models: Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, Techno XLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.

Maclaren has received reports of 12 amputations from children getting their fingertips cut off in a hinge, particularly when opening or closing the stroller.

News of the recall spread quickly this morning through news channels and the internet after Maclaren made the announcement.

Maclaren and the CPSC are recommending that owners of the strollers stop using them immediately until they receive and install a protective hinge cover. The repair kit is available free of charge from Maclaren.
