Allergic to her new husbands sperm - The story of the Boyde’s

allergy_sperm_boydes A Pennsylvania man has recently discovered that his wife is allergic to his sperm.

Mike, 27 and Julie Boyde, 26, had been dating for a couple of years before they married, however had always used condoms. Having sex for the first time, on their wedding night, Julie was alarmed by the physical sensation after her husband ejaculated. She told ABC News: “Before we were always very careful and, you know, used protection, and that time we didn’t,”

Mrs Boyde added: “The pain that I was feeling was inside, kind of like, somebody was sticking needles up inside of me and like a burning, like really painful burning.”

A friend of Julie’s thought she might be allergic to her husband’s sperm after Doctors were at a loss in explaining her discomfort after sex. She was eventually diagnosed with Seminal Plasma Hypersensitivity, which explains the burning sensation. An uncommon occurance - though around 30,000 women in the United States suffer allergic reactions to seminal fluid.

Dr. David Resnick, director of allergy at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia offers a treatment where the man’s semen is diluted and injected into the woman’s vagina in gradually increasing doses. Another treatment looks to isolate the proteins causing the allergic reaction and use them as a serum, like a vaccine to immunise the afflicted female.

Neither procedures have worked for the Boyde’s and they have begun the process of adoption.
