6-year-old boy attacked by Staffordshire bull terrier, whose handler was just 11-years-old
A six-year-old boy from Portsmouth, UK, was savagely attacked by a Staffordshire bull terrier outside a local supermarket, the incident left the boy needing 90 minutes of surgery to treat facial injuries.
Rhys Greenwood had been shopping with his mother, Carly, and was returning to the family car when the Staffordshire bull terrier leapt towards him, whilst the 11-year-old owner was unable to restrain the powerful terrier.
Simon Greenwood, 34, the father said: “Its teeth caught Rhys’ nose and top lip and tore right through the bottom lip and gum. Rhys’ chin was also punctured underneath,”
He continued saying Rhys had become withdrawn following the incident in Portsmouth.
“I’ve seen my really happy young boy turn into a shy lad, who is now really sad. It breaks my heart. Boys would not be allowed to stand around outside a shop with a knife or a gun and they shouldn’t be allowed to stand around with these dogs.”
Police are investigating the attack on the youngster. They have found the Staffordshire bull terrier responsible and humanely destroyed it. There is currently no legislation around age for dog handling, despite some breeds being more powerful than the handler.
