Coleen Rooney Sheds the Baby Weight

Less than a month after giving birth to her son Kai, Coleen Rooney is already sporting a svelte figure as the baby weight continues to fall off.

wayne_and_coleen_rooneyColeen and her husband Wayne attended the United for UNICEF charity Gala and you couldn’t even tell that Coleen had just given birth earlier this month. She was seen wearing a loose fitting black dress that tied around the waist. She finished the look with high heels and a cute clutch and appeared to be back to her fabulous, fashionista self.

Coleen hasn’t made it a secret that she wants to be back in her size 10 pants soon. From the looks of it, she appears well on her way to achieving this goal and it has only been 4 weeks.

Some people though are upset that Coleen, who says that she was looking forward to being the stay at home mum, has been seen out and about so much in the past 4 weeks since giving birth. She has been staying with her parents who watch Kai when she and Wayne goes out.

Kai is the first child for Coleen and Wayne.

Dr. Oz Speaks Out on Pregnancy — The Owner’s Manual to a Happy and Healthy Pregnancy

Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen have released their new book called “YOU:  Having a Baby: The Owner’s Manual to a Happy Healthy Pregnancy.”

pregnant_woman1Dr. Oz appears on Oprah regularly and recently began hosting his own new television show, The Dr. Oz Show.

Dr. Michael Roizen is the Chief Wellness Officer of the Wellness Institute of Cleveland Clinic and is also a featured medical expert on numerous television shows and in numerous magazines.  His first general audience book, “Real Age:  Are You As Young as You Can Be?” became a #1 New York Times bestseller.

Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen cover some basic genetics you might have had in tenth-grade biology class, but take things a step further by educating readers about a cutting-edge field known as epigenetics.  “While you can’t control which genes you pass on to your child, you do have some influence over which genes are expressed, affecting what features are seen in your baby (his phenotype).”

The new subject of “YOU-ology” is introduced — the discussion of how what you eat, breathe, and even feel can affect the long-term health of your baby.  These experts take things beyond what happens when the sperm meets the egg between the satin sheets.

“50% of women who are pregnant don’t realize it,” says Dr. Oz during the authors’ recent GMA interview with Diane Sawyer. Dr. Oz said it may be weeks or even months before women know.  The doctors hope to empower women with knowledge.

According to Dr. Oz, the carbonless cash register receipts handled everyday contain dangerous BPA chemicals, wash your hands.  They have lots to say about caffeine, vitamins, plastics and microwaves.

“Stress is the real reason we wrote the book.”  Stress has long been known to be the culprit of many medical conditions, but this book takes a fresh look at how stress, caffeine, and chemicals produced in the body in response to stress affect a child’s development.

Women more likely than men to hear crying babies while sleeping

Women are more likely to be roused from slumber by the sound of a crying baby than men according to new research.

crying_babyNew research out of MindLab has found that among men and women, there may be a distinct predisposition to certain sounds that wake them.

The researchers created a custom sleep environment for volunteers to use for sleeping. While sleeping, the volunteers were subjected to certain sounds, and their brain patterns were recorded by an EEG to determine what most disturbed them.

The study found that a baby’s crying was the most sleep-disrupting sound for women, yet such a sound didn’t even rank in the top ten for men, leading researchers to believe that there may be fundamental evolutionary differences between the sexes.

Among males, the sound of a car alarm was the most disturbing while howling wind and buzzing flies followed closely behind.

“These differing sensitivities may represent evolutionary differences that make women sensitive to sounds associated with a potential threat to their children while men are more finely tuned to disturbances posing a possible threat to the whole family,” said psychologist Dr. David Lewis of MindLab.

Additionally, the researchers found that women were more prone to having their sleep disturbed by men, and men were able to return to sleep more easily than women when woke by a disturbance.

The top ten sounds most likely to wake men and women as published by the Telegraph:

Men: 1. Car alarm. 2. Howling wind. 3. Buzzing fly. 4. Snoring. 5. Noise from drains. 6. Crickets chirping. 7. Sirens. 8. Clock ticking. 9. Drilling/workmen. 10. Dripping tap.

Women: 1. Baby crying. 2. Dripping tap. 3. Rowdiness. 4. Snoring. 5. Buzzing fly. 6. Drilling/workmen. 7. Sirens. 8. Car alarm. 9. Howling wind. 10. Noise from drains.

Government announces campaign to encourage youth to talk about safe sex

November 30, 2009 by Shawn Douglas

The UK government has announced a new campaign encouraging youth to talk more openly about safe sex in an effort to reduce teenage pregnancy rates.

contraception_worth_talking_aboutDespite best efforts to reduce teen pregnancy rates in the U.K. by 2010, the government’s 2007 figures show that there were 41.9 pregnancies per every 1000 people between the ages of 15 and 17, up from 40.9 in 2006.

This has led the Department of Health and the Department for Children, Schools and Families to announce a new awareness program called “Contraception. Worth Talking About.” The program aims to use speech bubbles and not actual people, with conversations related to sexual health taking place in places like the shopping center or the living room.

“The campaign is designed to change attitudes and show young people that having open conversations with their partners, friends, parents and health professionals is a must — it isn’t something to be embarrassed about,” said Public Health Minister Gillan Merron.

A recent survey of 16 to 24-year-olds found that 20 percent felt awkward discussing contraception with friends, and nearly 26 percent of them never considered talking about contraception with their partner.

“Sex still seems to be taboo — too many of us are holding back from having the open and honest conversations that young people need to make informed decisions, including about when it’s right to have sex,” said Merron.

Hilary Pannack, chief executive of Straight Talking, a sex education charity, agreed that talk of contraception use should be more natural. The charity, however, has taken a different approach with its program by utilizing teenage parents to spread the news.

Pannack told the BBC: “Young people also need a reason not to get pregnant and by employing teenage parents to deliver a program in schools to enable young people to understand the realities of early pregnancy and parenting, Straight Talking is providing a vital element of the prevention service which is largely being ignored.”

“Normalizing information about contraception, in particular information about condoms being the best protection from STIs, is important.”

In a separate press release, Anne Quesney, for the sexual health agency Marie Stopes International, said that while the agency welcomes the announcement, education must happen in the home as well.

“Parents also have a vital role to play in educating their children about fulfilling relationships and safe sex practices before they become sexually active,” said Quesney.

“Many adults find it difficult to talk to their children about sex, but the new government campaign may assist parents and help them to feel more comfortable in promoting an open attitude towards sex-related conversations, to ensure their children approach them for advice if needed.”

Safety Tips for Buying Baby Gate for Active Toddlers

November 30, 2009 by Cathy Ribble
Filed under News, Product News, Tips

baby_gateThe Nemours Foundation and HealthDay offer the following suggestions to help you make wise decisions when purchasing a baby gate.

Any toddler parent will tell you that a baby gate is essential equipment for maintaining your toddler’s safety — and your sanity — when a toddler is underfoot.

  • Choose a gate that mounts to a door frame with hardware.  There must not be any gaps where tiny fingers could get stuck.
  • Do not use a gate that mounts to the door frame with pressure.  A child could push it open and fall down a flights of stairs, for example.
  • Never use a gate that swings out at the top of a staircase.
  • Make sure there is a maximum gap of 2 inches between the bottom of the gate and the floor.
  • Any non-flexible barriers should have a gap of no more than 2-3/8 inches between them.
  • Make sure the gate does not have any sharp parts that could hurt a child.
  • The gate should not have any areas that a child could stick a foot into and attempt to climb.
  • When the gate reaches about three-quarters of the infant’s height (at about two years of age), stop using the gate.

Baby-proofing your house once your child reaches that crawling and toddler stage involves many decisions.  New gadgets and devices are constantly introduced on the market for new parents to consider.  Avoid impulse purchases of safety gear and do your homework.  Your child’s safety — and indeed, your child’s life — are in your hands.

Minnesota Baby Weighs In At 15 Lbs., 6 Oz.

Wendi and Michael Dolton welcomed the birth of their son Axel LaVerne three weeks early at a whopping 15 pounds, 6 ounces.  The Minnesota newborn will probably have a hard time losing the Thanksgiving nickname “butterball turkey” already tagged by his family.

axel_laverne_doltonWendi first learned that her baby was approximately 11 pounds on November 11.  She returned for a follow-up ultrasound on November 16 and the baby’s weight was up to 13 pounds.  She was scheduled for amniocentesis to check the baby’s lung development, but when the doctors discovered Wendi’s blood pressure was elevated, they immediately took her downstairs for delivery.

Big babies seem to run in the genes for this family.  Wendi was a 10-pound baby herself.  Doctors had to break both of her shoulders to complete her delivery.  Wendi has been diagnosed as borderline diabetic, but maintained her blood sugar levels throughout her pregnancy.  She had been placed on a form of the diabetic medication glyburide, but the medication level was reduced during the last month of her pregnancy because Wendi’s blood sugar levels were dropping too low.  She was experiencing shaking and sweating.

The average Minnesota baby weighs 7 pounds.  Axel’s family was featured on the Weekend Today show, filming from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Axel’s big sisters were also large babies with Naomi weighing 9 pounds and Emma at 11 pounds.

The family is relieved their little “butterball” is finally out of the oven and will hopefully be home soon.  Axel remains in the NICU, but is off oxygen.  He has been getting breast milk through a feeding tube, but breastfeeding is being introduced.  Best wishes to the happy family and here’s hoping and praying Axel is home soon!
