Mothercare set to expand in China

The Mothercare group, comprised of two well known retail brands, Mothercare and Early Learning Centre has announced plans to expand further into China.
Ben Gordon, Mothercare chief executive said: “Nineteen million babies a year (are born in China), so clearly the opportunity is huge.”
Plans are in motion to open six new stores in China in the second half of the year to add to its four outlets already there.
Overseas sales have jumped 23%, way ahead of the 2% increase seen in its UK stores.
Mr Gordon said: “This strong trading performance has offset the increases in costs arising from the continuing weakness of sterling, pensions and share-based payments.
“Whilst the economic environment remains uncertain, our first-half performance and the strategic initiatives we have taken give us confidence for the rest of the year.”
Mothercare is also looking to enter the Australian and South African markets as it seeks to maintain its international sales momentum.
