Baby Trafficking Ring Breakthrough as Smugglers arrested in Bulgaria
Police in Bulgaria have arrested a married couple in their late thirtees beleived to have trafficked pregnant women from Bulgaria into Greece, where they gave birth and sold their babies for adoption.
It’s a breakthrough for Police in Bulgaria accused of failing to crack down on organised crime from member European Union states.
The mothers were mostly Roma women who received about two-thirds of the payment, a police statement said.
About a dozen women were beleived to be involved in the baby trafficking ring and each child was sold for up to £7,200.
The Bulgarian couple gave financial support for the pregnant women in Greek hospitals and employed local attorneys to organise the adoptions. When the babies were born, fictitious names were made up for the fathers to bypass international adoption laws. Both attorneys and judges were beleived to be involved in the smuggling ring.
