Alabama Baby Unable to Cry

Jody Woods gave birth to Devon, her 7-pound baby boy on October 19th, but soon learned that his vocal cords are paralyzed.

Jody feels helpless because she is unable to do anything for her son.  Even the urge to cry will cause baby Devon to begin turning blue.  Medical tests on Tuesday revealed additional health problems for the infant involving his white blood cell count and his bladder.

Woods and Devon’s father, Joshua Sutterfield, have moved to Birmingham, Alabama, to be near their son who is being treated at Children’s Hospital.  They are currently staying at the nearby Ronald McDonald house.

“Instead of vibrating and doing what they’re supposed to, they cut off his circulation, to like his airway,” says Joshua.

“The fear of losing your child, you know, it’s real hard when you think about those things.  It tends to break you down,” says Joshua.

The couple struggles to keep their faith as Devon’s health problems continue a series of setbacks for the family.  In addition to Devon, they have a 2-year-old daughter.  Joshua has been unable to find work because of the wet weather.  He sets foundations for trailers.  For Joshua’s family, no work means no family income.  No income means all kinds of problems.  The couple is unable to pay their rent, and they expect to be evicted from their home in Cullman within a few days.  They have been unable to make the payment on their car, and the vehicle was repossessed three days ago.

“Just have faith in the Lord it’s going to work out,” says Jody.

“That God will intervene and work this out and heal that baby,” says Ruby Sutterfield, Devon’s grandmother.
