Trial Of Young Mother Who Gave Birth And Abandoned Baby In Walmart Toilet Begins
The trial of a woman who gave birth and abandoned her baby in a Walmart toilet in Canada begins this week.
April Halkett, 21, is charged with child abandonment in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
She has been accused of leaving her newborn boy after she gave birth at the outlet Stores bathroom in May, 2007. The child was later discovered by a customer who alerted the staff.
Images of Halkett from the store’s security cameras were released by the police after the incident. She was seen on the video footage entering the store at 5:05pm and leaving 14 minutes later.
Halkett later turned herself in the police, and told them that she was the mother. She has been seen during court appearances in a distressed state, trying to conceal her face.
The boy, who was taken to hospital after being discovered, has been placed into care. Lawyers have told the media that Halkett has met with her child and hopes to one day be reunited with him.
