Natascha McElhone Reveals Why She Gave Birth Alone

Actress Natascha McElhone, who’s husband died when she was only 4 months pregnant reveals how she is coping and why she decided to give birth alone.

Natascha McElhone was only four months pregnant, when her famous surgeon husband Martin Kelly, 43, died very suddenly. The actress gave Hello! magazine a candid interview about giving birth to her son Rex without her husband and raising her other two children alone.

On giving birth alone, the actress said, “It just felt right somehow. If Martin couldn’t be there, I couldn’t replace him with someone, as that would have felt very strange.” She went on to say, “I wanted to be on my own because that was the way it was going to be. I was going to be my baby’s only parent so I may as well get used to it.”

Rex was born on October 16 of last year at the same hospital that her husband did much of his work at. She says that she named him Rex Coltrane Kelly because her husband’s favorite jazz musician was John Coltrane.

The actress goes on to say that she is happy that she had two sons with her husband before Rex, since she knew what to expect and what her husband would have done.

She says, “So I imagine him kissing the back of Rex’s neck and doing all the things he loved doing with the others. I say to the boys, “Daddy used to do this with you guys.” They’ll say, “Let’s do it to Rexy!” and we all pile in and give him hugs.”

Natascha McElhone has three children with her late husband: Theo, 8, Otis, 5, and Rex, now 7 months old.
