Two-Month-Old Astounds Doctors By Breathing On Her Own
Two month old Kaylee Wallace has stunned Canadian doctors by miraculously surviving against all odds.
The baby girl, who suffers from the rare condition Joubert Syndrome, continued to breath after being taken off life support.
Joubert Syndrome is a brain malformation which makes breathing difficult and reduces motor functions.
Kaylee had been scheduled for a heart transplant to help a one-month-old girl who is desperate for a new heart. Kaylee’s parents had decided to take her off life support and donate her heart to Lily O-Connor.
Despite being told that Kaylee would be unable to breathe without help of a respirator, she astounded medics by breathing on her own.
Medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton from the Early Show said “When they found that she could in fact breathe, maintain her oxygenation, she no longer obviously was a candidate for organ donation.”
Canada has a different process of organ donation to the States, and donors can request specific recipients. In the States, often identities are concealed from both parties.
Baby Lily is at the top of the waiting list for a transplant. Less than 400 heart transplants are performed on babies in the USA annually due to the lack of suitable donors.
