Man Becomes a Daddy 22 Years After Freezing Sperm

A couple in Charlotte, NC have set the world record for having used the longest frozen sperm to produce a baby.

Chris Biblis was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 13 and was treated with 3 years of chemotherapy. When he truned 16, doctors told his parents that he would need more chemotherapy along with radiation, which would make him sterile. His parents wanted him to be able to become a father one day, so they decide to freeze his sperm before his radiation therapy.

Twenty two years later, Chris is now the proud father of a little baby girl. Last year, Chris’s wife, Melodie underwent a special in vitro fertilization to join the sperm of her husband with her egg. The procedure was a success and their daughter Stella was born 9 months later.

Stella was without any complications. She weighed in at 7pounds, 7 ounces and is developing nicely.

Biblis’ sperm was frozen on April 25, 1986, at a sperm bank in Atlanta, and was thawed June 12, 2008. A rep for Vanguard Communications in Colorado, who represents the Charlotte doctors who performed the procedure, says ““We believe this is a world record.”

Two of the fertilized embryos were implanted into Melodie’s uterus, but only one of them developed. Five other fertilized embryos were frozen for possible future use by the couple. The couple only took the first try of in vitro fertilization to become pregnant with their daughter.

Chris Biblis has now been cancer free for 20 years.
