Woman Jailed For Buying Baby For $6,000
A Missouri woman was jailed for buying a baby for $6,000 in Washington county.
Denise Novotny, 36, is believed to have purchased the baby girl from a Kewaskum couple in December 2004.
Parents David and Angela Schmidt are thought to have signed a surrogate contract in an attempt to make the exchange appear legal.
Novotny has been charged with child abduction and illegal adoption and remains behind bars in a Missouri jail.
Although the Schmidts have admitted that the girl was theirs, they have not asked for their daughter to be returned.
Currently it is against the law to sell a baby, although adoptive parents can contribute financially towards maternity clothes, living expenses, birthing classes, or give the natural parents a gift.
For an adoption to be legal, parents are required to appear before a judge to terminate their rights.
“Real surrogacy can be a good option for people who are experiencing infertility and it’s a shame something like this happens because then it just gives it a bad name,” says Donna Strayer, Director of Mequon’s Adoption Services.
No charges have been made against the couple for selling the baby, although the case remains open.
